When Latvia joined the European Union (EU) on 1 May 2004, social issues were coordinated according to the Regulation No. 1408/71 of the Council on the application of social security schemes to employed persons and their families moving within the Community (Regulation No 1408/71) and the Regulation No 574/72 (Regulation No 574/72) laying down the procedure for implementing Regulation No 1408/71.
Family benefits in compliance with Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 and Regulation 987/009
Any European Union (EU) institution employee who has joined the EU pension scheme is entitled to transferring his/her pension capital accumulated from the Latvian state obligatory pension insurance system to the EU pension scheme. Also, it is possible to transfer the pension capital accumulated from the EU pension scheme to the Latvian state obligatory pension insurance system.
If a worker or a self-employed person or a family member maintained by the person has died in a member state which is not the competent state (competent is the state of employment), the death is considered to have happened in the competent state.
